Part-time Veterinary Assistant or Licensed Veterinary Technician

Position Summary: Start work between 4–6 AM, single doctor practice, shelter medicine and HQHVSN

Responsibilities

• Administer vaccinations, subcutaneous (SQ) fluids, and injectable and oral medications.
• Perform in-house laboratory testing, including IDEXX SediVue, Catalyst, fecal floats, and urinalysis.
• Maintain accurate medical records and controlled substance documentation.
• Prepare patients for surgery, take radiographs, monitor anesthesia, and obtain vital signs.
• Follow established protocols and veterinary instructions while using sound judgment and critical-thinking skills.
• Work efficiently, take initiative, and confidently complete tasks independently.
• Collaborate with a small, dedicated team to provide quality medical care to animals in our shelter.

Ideal Candidate

• Has veterinary assistant experience or is a Licensed Veterinary Technician (LVT).
• Is comfortable handling animals and performing routine veterinary medical procedures.
• Is detail-oriented, organized, and able to prioritize tasks in a fast-paced environment.
• Demonstrates initiative, critical-thinking skills, and the ability to work independently.
• Works well with a small team and shares a commitment to animal welfare.

• Valid Michigan driver's license, an acceptable driving record, and reliable transportation.
• Current tetanus vaccination.
• Ability to lift, push, pull, and carry up to 50 pounds with reasonable accommodations.

Full-time Intake Coordinator

The Intake Coordinator plays an important role in managing the shelter’s animal population through a limited intake system, helping ensure animals receive appropriate care while supporting members of our community who need assistance.

About the Position

As Intake Coordinator, you will serve as an important point of contact for individuals seeking to surrender animals, coordinate animal intake assessments, and assist with surgical and vaccination services for owned pets. You will also help manage our foster program, ensuring foster caregivers have the resources and support they need to care for animals.

Key Responsibilities

• Answer phone calls, return messages, and respond to emails regarding animal intake requests.
• Coordinate animal surrenders, transfers, and transports.
• Conduct preliminary medical and behavioral assessments and assist with admission decisions.
• Create and maintain accurate animal records, including preventive care history.
• Administer initial vaccines and parasite prevention to incoming shelter animals.
• Coordinate check-in and check-out for owned animals receiving surgical services.
• Prepare surgery and vaccination certificates and assist with vaccination clinics.
• Recruit, train, and support foster caregivers while coordinating preventive care for foster animals.
• Maintain a clean, welcoming intake desk and lobby.
• Communicate professionally and compassionately with members of the public.

• Computer proficiency and the ability to learn shelter management software.

• Experience working with animals and an understanding of animal care.
• The ability to work independently while also taking direction and collaborating with a team.
