Why Work at Cascades Humane Society

CHS has been one of Jackson County's most trusted nonprofits for more than 74 years — and the people who work here are the reason. Every staff member plays a direct role in the care, placement, and wellbeing of more than 1,200 animals per year. This isn't a job where your effort disappears into a process. You will see the animals you care for go home with families. You will know their names. You will watch them get better. If you've been looking for work that feels like it matters, this is it.

  • CHS is a no-kill facility — every animal in our care receives the time and resources needed to find a home, and your work contributes directly to that outcome
  • Our team operates with a genuine community mission, supported by a 4-star Charity Navigator rating and a 93% accountability score that reflects how seriously we take our responsibility to this community
  • Working at CHS means joining a team of people who chose this work on purpose — and who show up every day because the animals are worth it

Employment Questions, Answered

  • What positions are currently open at Cascades Humane Society?

CHS is currently accepting applications for two part-time positions: Animal Care and Adoption Counselor. Both require applicants to be 18 years of age or older. The Adoption Counselor role also requires comfort with basic computer use. Click the Apply Now button on this page to submit your application for either position.

  • Do I need experience working with animals to apply?

A love of animals and a reliable, hardworking attitude matter more than a formal resume in animal welfare. Specific experience requirements vary by role — the application is the best place to share your background and let our team assess fit. If you're new to shelter work, volunteering at CHS before or during your job search is a great way to build familiarity with the environment.

  • Is prior shelter or veterinary experience required for Animal Care positions?

Not necessarily. Willingness to learn, physical reliability, and genuine care for the animals are the qualities we look for most. CHS provides training for shelter-specific tasks and procedures. If you have relevant experience, include it in your application — but don't let the absence of it stop you from applying.

  • What if there are no current openings that fit my background?

Check back regularly — positions open as needs change. In the meantime, volunteering or fostering is the best way to get to know our team and demonstrate your commitment to the mission. Many CHS staff members started as volunteers, and that experience goes a long way when a position becomes available.
